His sketches are powerful in their line of tone. Searching profound serenity, the pen sketches, in particular are very lively and thought provoking.
His intimate study of people allowed him to get to the core of his themes.
He wanted to explore their emotions and inner visions.
Shah Alam’s works are seemingly polished yet uncomplicated. His water colours exude delight and at the same time project the agony of islolation.
The portrayals stand out for his attention to details.

Shah Alam was a realistic painter. His images demonstrate a certain sensibility. He lighlighted the colours of the water colour world – emerald, green and red are predominantly used.
Evidently he had good control over colours and compositions. His colours are a link with figures and visages. Shah Alam concentrated on colours, smooth tones and expressive portraits of both male and female figures. From his unique application on the paper, the colours carress the figures with warmth. His soft and refined brush strokes create a flat surface on the paper.
